The Back Story:
Geraldine and all of her small friends, Soshi and Buck and Loretta, and Toshiko and Skippy, met a long time ago, at School, where they all had to keep their feathers neat and tidy, and all worn in the same way, like uniformed school-kids the world over. The birdie equivalent of navy skirts with pleats or neatly pressed trousers, and white starched shirts, and black sleeve-less sweaters, and navy blazers, and those tall knee-socks if you were one of the ones in a skirt, and uncomfortable shining-with-polish matching shoes.* But now they are grown, and have gone their own happy ways, in feathers of violet and yellow, roseate hues with green in the tails, or a little complimentary navy and orange for those who found inspiration in those old school duds. They gather together from time to time, especially at the New Year and the Holidays, and make a happy flittering, tittering mob. Each have their own sort of celebrating to do -- as different, indeed, as their feathered costumes: the lighting of candles or trimming of trees or celebrations of the moon or feasting or fasting or fireworks. All the same, they each do their bit to mark another turning of the earth, and wish for peace in the coming year. *Ever So Important Note: Even if you wear a uniform just exactly like that of your friend Morton and his friend Lorinda, the song you sing will not sound the same. Tweet tweet tweed-ed-de-de-de-del-de-do, Morton says. Twe twee tseee tee lu lu, says Lorinda. But shant we anyway nosh together on some delicious end-of-the-year festive treats? And sing a little shared song: tweeeee tse tse tweed-ed-de tweet tweet tooo? |
